ELEVEN

Although he didn’t mention the word ‘stagnating’, it immediately became apparent that the commander was under the impression that Carrick had not made much progress, and it was gratifying to be able to correct this. I did most of the talking because Patrick had slightly reduced the dose of his painkillers. They made him feel woozy and he was paying the price.

‘Is this Fielding character aware that you’re man and wife?’ Greenway demanded to know.

‘Of course not,’ I replied. ‘We’re officially just colleagues and always have been when working together.’

‘I’d like you to be there when he’s questioned again.’

‘Carrick might say that I’m an interested party,’ was my reaction to this. ‘It’s against the rules.’

‘Bugger the rules. You leave Carrick to me.’

Police protocols have never been a strong point with him.

‘Rolt’s back at work,’ he went on, something we knew already. ‘I understand that he’s put into place a review of security and working practices after the attack on him and the subsequent murders of two of his personnel.’

Patrick said, ‘He put his head into the lion’s mouth by staying at that pub. He knew there were rumours about the place before he went and it just happened to coincide with the barman’s need of revenge after being picked up for drink-driving.’

‘But how did they know he was a cop?’ Greenway wondered. ‘Surely he didn’t tell them.’

‘Pass,’ Patrick said. ‘But he does look like one. Or an overheard phone call from work, perhaps.’

We had already agreed that we would not mention the business of Rolt’s girlfriend arriving and as good as trumpeting his profession from the rooftops as there was no point in providing Greenway with any more fuel for his resentment. The conversation veered to the subject of the sick leave Patrick would need – I said at least two months – but was overruled by both of them and a month was agreed upon, this to be reviewed in the event of any setbacks. I was assured by the commander that he would only be given ‘light duties’ to begin with.

Yeah, right.

They reviewed the case together before Greenway left. Patrick then made his way, slowly, to his parents’ annexe to give his father the whisky as he was not allowed to drink anything alcoholic at the moment and didn’t want to, a measure of how unwell he was feeling.

A couple of hours later, James Carrick contacted me. ‘I ken you’d like to be in on my further questioning of John Fielding.’

Yes, delighted.

‘Oh, and Paul Bradley’s discharged himself from hospital. Don’t worry, I’ll find him.’

There were no obvious signs, in that the DCI’s ears weren’t still visibly burning, of any input of Greenway’s that had resulted in my presence in the interview room; in fact, he seemed to be in buoyant mood. As might have been expected, Fielding wasn’t and gave me a look that promised injury and worse, much worse. For a few seconds, my skin crawled.

‘I could have done with Patrick being here,’ Carrick had said before
